Fishing is one of the most common side activities in video games you’ll ever see. Throne and Liberty’s system is complicated and daunting for newer players at first, which can easily deter you from ever attempting it. Fortunately, it’s simpler than you think and only requires learning some quick strategies.

Throne and Liberty fishing guide

Starting your fishing adventures in Throne and Liberty requires getting your hands on afishing rod and bait.Doing this unlocks the ability to cast your line into any body of water, collect fish, and use them for quests or diving into thegame’s cooking system. you’re able to equip both through your inventory.

Once you have your fishing rod and bait on hand, approach any pond, river, or ocean and look for a blue marker to appear. If it’s red, you’re able to’t cast your line here; it has to turn blue to be an appropriate spot. The buttons for casting your line are F on PC or the square/X button on the controller.

Upon casting your line, a fish will catch onto the line within a few seconds. Once the on-screen indicator appears, press Q on PC or L1/LB on controller to begin the minigame. A good starting trick is to press the button several times to reduce the fish’s health immediately, making it easier to reel in.

The fishing minigame

DuringThrone and Liberty’sfishing minigame, there are three main components to watch:

First up is the orange health bar, indicating how close you are to catching the fish. Once the fish icon reaches the bottom, you’ll successfully catch the fish and complete the minigame. you’re able to immediately reduce 25 percent of it by spamming either Q or L1/LB when the fishing pop-up first appears.

You’ll reduce the fish’s stamina from here by moving your fishing rod from side to side. If the fish moves one way, pull it the opposite way. If it’s in the center, keep it there until you reel it in.

Next is the green stamina bar for your character. Rather than having unlimited energy to pull the fish in, your character will eventually tire out, forcing you to briefly pause and potentially lose the fish. Fortunately, if your green bar reaches the bottom, you just need to stop moving your line for about half a second to let your stamina recharge, allowing you to jump right back in and continue.

Lastly is the light above the fish. Once you begin the fishing minigame, imagine a line from your character to the fish, indicating the ideal center point to keep the fish at. Over time, the fish will swim left and right away from this line, requiring you to pull it back toward the center. If this light turns red, your line is about to snap, causing you to fail the minigame.

Generally speaking, this minigame is about tiring out the fish by pulling your line in the opposite direction it’s swimming. If it’s in the center, shift your line direction slightly to keep it there. Otherwise, if it’s far to one side, put all of your energy into pulling it the other way, taking a half-second breather to regain your stamina before using it all again. Eventually, you’ll drain the bar and catch a fish or reward sack.

How to get a fishing rod in Throne and Liberty

If you don’t yet have a fishing rod inThrone and Liberty, you can get one by completing the Adventures of the Expedition quest or purchasing one from the Contract Coin Merchant for 300 coins. Since the Adventures of the Expedition quest is an early-game mission you finish after a few hours of playing, I’d recommend waiting for it. It doesn’t hurt to buy one if you want an earlier start, though.

You’ll find Contract Coin Merchants in Kastleton, Stonegard Castle, and Vienta Village. They each sell a Bamboo Fishing Rod for 300 contract coins, which you obtain by completing resistance contracts. You can also buy Paste Bait here for 20 coins, which I recommend over the rod.

Alternatively, you may complete Adventures of the Expedition, a Chapter 3 Adventure quest involving Amitoi Expeditions. Upon sending an Amitoi on an expedition, talk to Adventurer Pro Percy to wrap up the mission, rewarding you with the fishing rod and a fishing-related quest later in the story.

How to get fishing bait in Throne and Liberty

Throne of Libertyhas four bait types that influence the fish you get. While the most common variant, Paste Bait, doesn’t affect your catch rates, others significantly increase the odds of obtaining particular fish sizes.

Below is every fish bait type and their locations:

Paste Bait is your best bet if you just want to fish without worrying about bite chances. Otherwise, you can hunt monsters, harvest trees, or redeem fish sack rewards to get other types. Since the other three bait types are pretty rare, you’ll want to be careful with how much you use, especially if you’re still learning the fishing minigame.
