WhenDoomwas first released, at least one person I knew was confused by it. “Where the heck am I? I don’t see anyone here at all!” they squawked. “You are the player.” 16-year-old me retorted brassily “You have to go around and kill the demons”. “No I’m not!” they’d protest, “I’m me! How can I be me and the playerat the same time?!?!“

If you look closely, you’ll see that Doom guy isn’t taking his selfies in the conventional way. He’s using something called a “selfie stick“, which is something I did not know existed until about five seconds ago. If a videogame where you are the player character was confusing to him, I have no idea how Grandpa is going to handle the news about the selfie stick.
