Super Smash Bros.has been one of the most popular gaming franchises in all time, but attempts of like-minded players to find their special other in the community have met an unfortunate end.

In an ideal world, SmashTogether could have been an amazing place for like-minded Smash Bros. It would have been the perfect application for the community to come, mix, and match over something they love:Smash Bros.Unfortunately for fans, the app has met a sad ending even before its journey could begin.

Smas Bros. dating app shuts down even before its journey began

SmashTogether was supposed to start its open beta on May 15, which would have been the first time it would have been available for the public. The app’s X handle even put out a tweet celebrating the occasion and listed what users had to do to gain access.

Unfortunately, the app is never going to be available en mass, as it has been hit by a cease-and-desist notice ahead of its launch. The news was announced on the app’s X account as well.

The source of the cease-and-desist remains unclear as of writing, but my guess will be on Nintendo. After all, it’s the oneswho owns the complete IP ofSmash Bros.It appears there have been enough in the app that would count for break of patent law and copyright infringement.

For example, the app had images of characters from theSmash Bros., which is a valid ground of copyright infringement. It also featured adages and prompts that are found in dating apps, but with twists to match the overall theme ofSmash Bros.

In a parallel universe, the app might have helpedSmash Bros.players to find their soulmates, both for inside and outside the game’s universe. As of writing, the developers haven’t announced any alternate plans, or if theSmashTogetherapp will be revived in the alternate future.

If they’re trying to stick to the theme, maybe going for a non-Nintendo game will be a safer choice for sure.
