The Xbox 360’s original code name was a nod to The Matrix

Fun facts Microsoft’s home consoles represent a blind spot in my video game knowledge. For one reason or another, I’ve never owned one. But even though an Xbox has never graced my television screen, I’ve still spent countless hours playing 360 games with my friends. The Xbox 360 has a memorable legacy. Following a meteoric rise in popularity during the seventh console generation, it often felt like everyone in the world owned one of Microsoft’s white boxes....

Either way, I’m in the mood for more imaginativeMariogames and this looks to be our answer. Check out these screenshots to see what I mean. I had a hard time picking one image to use as the header considering almost all of these would have done a fine job....

You should feel bad, but games don’t want you to

Violence and vindication: The seedy psychology behind a sociopathic medium You monster. Outside of the casual and educational spheres, violence abounds in games. Even Mario is violent, albeit not gratuitous. Combative, at least. Much of the game is purely avoiding obstacles, but eventually some form of cartoon, innocuous violence will be necessary for progression, be it dumping turtles in lava or tossing a mustachioed bomb on his royal, explosive tuches. And that’s fine....

43 minutes of the Oblivion-to-Skyrim port, Skyblivion

Not the easiest name to say. Oblivirim? Skyrimcame out four long years ago now. For four years, we’ve been striding out into the tundra, exploring new cities, fighting in the civil war, all of which conveniently requiring us to go into yet another crypt full of a metric fucktonne of Draugr. But since then, a few pretty huge revivals of the olderElder Scrollsgames have been in the works. You probably already know aboutSkywind, which aims to portMorrowindto the newer game’s engine, but did you know about its less elegantly named siblingSkyblivion?...

ActRaiser Renaissance is a pleasant surprise for SNES fans, and it’s out right now

A revival of the legendary Super Nintendo original for Switch, PS4, PC, and mobile My biggest surprise at today’s Nintendo Direct, by far, was Square Enix’s reveal and insta-release ofActRaiser Renaissance— an unlikely return of the action-platformer-meets-heavenly-town-builder-simActRaiser. It’s a Super Nintendo classic — no “cult” needed. The developer is calling this a “remaster,” but I feel like that undersells the new look. ActRaiser Renaissanceis out now for $30. Not just onNintendo Switch, but onPS4,PC,iOS, andAndroid, too....

Alien: Isolation captures the mood of Ridley Scott’s film

One Alien, one terrifying experience Have you ever been hunted? I haven’t (in a videogame or, thankfully, real life). Some games make veiled attempts to simulate the sense, but as long as you learn and know the correct order of operations, they usually don’t take much to best.Alien: Isolationmade me feel as if I was being hunted for the first time ever. It competently thrusts you into the role of the prey, and as a result, it is completely f*cking terrifying....
