Let’s get social

In a blog postdiscussingrecent award wins forPokemon Go, developer Niantic included a short but promising tease about its near-future content plans. What do you make of this? “With spring arriving in the northern hemisphere, players can look forward to all new cooperative social gameplay experiences inPokémon GOthat will give Trainers new and exciting reasons to get back into the sunshine.”

What this update could and should entail is up for debate, but some players arespeculatingthat it might tie into a not-yet-fully-implemented “raid” feature and/or a possible gym rework. That sounds believable enough, and I’m brought back to that cool but unrepresentative live-action trailer in which a huge group of strangers worked together to beat up and catch Mewtwo in Times Square.

As it stands, it is possible to playGoalongside others and form genuine connections, but more than that, I’d like to see features that actively encourage (but don’trequire) players to cooperate.

It’s amusing to think about the sustained crowds that formed at the height of the game’s popularity. If people are willing toswarm for Vaporeon, imagine what a legendary sighting could do.
