The team can only do so many projects
The last time Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about the possibility of anotherSuper Mario Galaxy, the team was busy withSuper Mario 3D Worldand physically couldn’t “make both at the same time.” But moreGalaxy,he said, could happen at a later date. The dream was alive.
More recently,Eurogamerspoke to Miyamoto about the same topic. “[A newMario Galaxy] is always in discussion,” he said. “But even withMario 64there was a lot of feedback about motion sickness with the 3D or maybe us making it too difficult.” That’s why Nintendo stuck withNew Super Mario Bros.for so long — “anyone can play that.”

“We’re always thinking, is there a middle ground where people who do enjoy the 3D worlds ofGalaxyand those who enjoyNew Super Mario Bros.can both enjoy it? We’re always looking at those opportunities,” Miyamoto said. “On the other hand, me and [Yoshiaki] Koizumi-san, director ofGalaxy, are always looking to challengeGalaxyand do another 3D action title. However we can’t make so many games at once in parallel.”
With upcoming Nintendo projects like the newly-confirmedPikmin 4, we’re increasingly left wondering if the game in question will land on Wii U or wait until the next platform,NX, is ready. Miyamoto noted that the current console is “good enough in terms of hardware performance” — that “it is more the workload of the team” holding them back — but also said “there will be a lot of opportunity” for different styles of games “as the hardware technology gets better and advances.”
