The Lara you used to know and love

Crystal Dynamics has announced a new mobile runner titledLara Croft: Relic Run. The name’s fittingly nebulous. Is Lara running after relics? Or, is the old-school Lara the running relic, a classic character hearkening back to a bygone era of gaming?

Probably both, to be honest.

Naming convention aside,Lara Croft: Relic Runlooks to be a fairly standard runner, but Crystal Dynamics insists it’s so much more. According to the co-developer, it’ll also include “acrobatic-inspired running, combat, vehicles, and epic boss fights.” With regard to boss encounters, there’s a T-Rex, and that’s definitely a step in the right direction.

As of now, only one nationality can give Lara’s latest adventure the ol’ college try. It soft-launched in Holland today, but will roll out globally in the coming months. It’ll be free-to-play on iOS, Android, and Win8 Phone, probably with some microtransactions because shareholders tend to think monetization is important.

While some (maybe many) will find it difficult to get excited about a runner, it’s nice to know that theTomb Raiderkeepers haven’t completely rebooted Lara. While her grander roles these days have her murdering island cultists, some part of her wants to get back to her roots: stealing ridiculous amounts of treasure and fortune.
