Beats out FFXV
In the three days following its launch,Final Fantasy VII Remakemoved 3.5 million copies both “shipped and sold digitally,” but it looks like due to strong word of mouth, the rest of the month was very fruitful for Square Enix.
Mat Piscatella of the NPD groupshared this morning thatFinal Fantasy VII Remakehad pushed enough copies to make it the “launch month unit and dollar sales best in franchise history,” beating out the previous franchise king during the same period:Final Fantasy XV.
NPD data also claims that it was the best-selling game of April 2020, and “instantly” became the number three best-selling game of the year in a matter of days. It’s also the top-seller in all of 2020 on PS4 specifically.
Coming in second in April isCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, followed byAnimal Crossing: New Horizons. With how wildly popular those two games are, it just goes to show you how much power theFinal Fantasyname has, and how big theFinal FantasyVIIbrand still is. It also must be extremely stressful (and tiring) for theFinal Fantasydevelopment teams to try and top themselves with each subsequent release.
