Diablo III‘s real money auction housewent live last night, and people are already proving that they have more money than sense. Within hours of it opening up, folks are gleefully pumping more of their own hard earned cash in to the system, and those with the rare goods are seeing how far they can push it.

Single items are currently available for prices as exorbitant as $200, as players feel out the landscape and attempt to get what they can out of it. I’d check to see how many of those are selling, but Battle.net is down for maintenance … go figure.

It’s at this point that I will politely step away fromDiablo III. I had my fun with it, but I have no intention of diving into a system that tries to put freemium content in a $60 product, and I have a feeling that the game’s economy is going to be weird anyway. The in-game gold auctions were already ridiculous enough.

Ah well. There seem to be a bunch of people willing to pay the piper anyway, so I guess this will become a success.
